Another 31 competitors will go on behalf of the Biggest Island of the Caribbean, with Pedro Pablo Pichardo and Yarisley Silva as our principal candidates for medals.
In the case of the Camagüeyans the prognoses turn out to be more discreet. Skyers, for example, takes as his best record of the period the fourth position obtained in the Pan-American Games of Toronto (20.02 seconds, 14 place among the times of the year). In the half tour to the field the biggest opportunities will "run" in legs of the North American Justin Gatlin (number one of 2015, 19.57s), the Jamaican Rasheed Dwyer (19.80), the Canadian Andre DeGrasse (19.88) and the Panamanian Alonso Edward (19.90); for Skyers it could be a positive balance to be among the finalists.
DeGrasse, Dwyer and Edward had, in this order, the medals in the continental event of last July. (Attention: one must not lose sight to thedangerous Usain Bolt, who has been in the shade during the last months but will go to defend his supremacy of 2013).
To be included in the final would be one of the most optimistic stages for the Yordan O'Farrill (13.23, number 47 of the list). In spite of his juvenile world title (Barcelona 2012) and the positive evolution that has supported during the last years, the Camagüeyan still need many ¨runs¨ to measure on equal terms with the American David Oliver (12.98s, second time of the year and Pan-American champion in the Canadian fight). Being one of eight big ones -as he would say- would be a good outcome.
The poor O'Farril performance in the Canadian event (disqualified in the final) can be compared to that of Rose Mary Almanza, who in the 800 meters was the big favorite thanks to her good times of the calendar (1:57.70 minutes, second, two reductions in her personal record). But such a condition "weighed" too much and she wraped up relegated to the fourth place after an awful career in which she closed with 2:01.82. In accordance with the seen till now, she must have a place among the finalists, but to claim medals...
In the last world edition of the athletics outdoors (Moscow 2013) Cuba wraped up in the 23rd position thanks to Pichardo´s silver, and the bronzes of Silva and Yarelis Barrios (throwing of the disc).
