CAMAGÜEY.- The work sessions of the delegation from the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz (UC) in centers of higher education in Belgium, continued with the visit to two prestigious institutions in this nation of the Old Continent. On the Wednesday morning, the Cuban committee was at Ghent University, in its Data Center and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which is at the top of the world ranking.
“There, we discussed with its professors, researchers and executives about the cooperation between the universities of Camagüey and Ghent”, informed Yailé Caballero Mota, Director of International Relations in the UC.
“Besides, we dialogued about the projects ERASMUS+, joint publications, our doctorate students that are staying in Belgium for research. It was debated about new collaboration opportunities with the project VLIR-IUC, which is the one we are applying for, and we took a tour around some of the facilities in the Veterinary Medicine Faculty”, added the source.

The specialist from our country, headed by the rector of the UC, Dr. C. Santiago Lajes Choy, had a tour around the University of Antwerp in the afternoon, specifically at the Microbiology, Parasitology and Hygiene laboratories, which counts with several doctorate students from the Camagüeyan academy.
“In Antwerp we visited the Laboratory of Science of Proteins, Proteomic and Epigenetic Signs, and the specialists there showed a great interest in collaborating for the development of joint research projects related to patient response to lung cancer and the search for natural compounds with antitumour activity”, stated Caballero Mota.
“Then we held a meeting with researchers from the Institute of Urban Studies, which counts with over 15 research groups, and hosts every year Summer Schools and assigns a budget to annually invite two or three specialists for scientific visits”.
Finally, the delegation from the University of Camagüey was received by the Rector of the University of Antwerp, Dr. C. Herman Van Goethem, who showed interest and support in the collaboration and development for the VLIR-IUC project which, in the case of the UC, aims to reach a food independence in Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas and Granma, with a national impact, in a context of new policies for local development.
