CAMAGÜEY.- As of May 20, it confirmed 817 new cases, a figure that far exceeds the month of April and is close to surpassing the month of February, which has been the second with the highest number of notifications, so this may be the month with the highest incidence. The upward trend became greater in the current week with almost 400 new positives, it was the third week of the year with the highest report and the fourth on the rise.
This illustrates a sustained increase in the presence of the virus in the territory. This has kept the rate between 60 and 70. 1,167 outbreaks have been closed and 299 were active.
More than 600 active cases in the last fifteen days have generated more than 5,000 contacts. Some 500 patients were admitted, including one from each of the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Havana and Villa Clara.
Juan Jesús Llambías Peláez, director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, explained that work is still being carried out at the Manuel Ascunce teaching surgical clinical hospital, where 6,458 samples have been taken for PCR, with 74 positives, 39 workers, 27 patients and eight companions. Two services remain controlled with all the restrictions and where the Health personnel when leaving there are isolated.
Llambías Peláez reported that information on the presence of the South African strain was received in the province in samples previously sent for this specific analysis regarding strains that are only performed at the IPK.
“It is here and the frequency with which we detect it is not low. Most are from the Camagüey municipality, some from Previsora, others from the Center area, Minas and Nuevitas ”.
The doctor insisted that, although this is more contagious, for any of the variants the measures are the same: physical distancing and taking care of hygiene.
Regarding the Molecular Biology Laboratory, the doctor added that its processing capacity has been diminished because one of its extractors, by decision of the country, was transferred to the capital coinciding with the start of the increase in cases in Camagüey, but it is expected one that triples the capacity of what we currently have and this would give the possibility of doing about 1,200 daily exams.
