CAMAGÜEY.- Carlos Lazo continues to build Bridges of Love, now visiting Cuba with his wife and Miguel Lewis, a member of the group that for more years has accompanied him on his pilgrimages in the United States for the Cuban family.

He arrived on the island after traveling more than 2,000 kilometers, on foot, from Miami to Washington and in this way demanding that President Biden fulfill his promise and put an end to the sanctions that weigh on the Cuban family.

The teacher, as his students affectionately call him and even those of us who are not, rectify the first question of the questionnaire in this conversation with Adelante Digital “For me the question is not why travel to Cuba now, but how not to travel to Cuba now . How not to travel to Cuba when my brothers are in dire need, when the country is in a tremendous situation with a lack of medicines, a lack of supplies, the effects of the pandemic that has affected the economy and, on top of that, the exacerbation of the blockade. How not to reach out, even in a humble gesture, a gesture that may not solve many things, because it is limited by the pounds that one can carry and the medicines that one can carry, but at the same time one can carry more things than be pounds of medicines, which are love and solidarity.

“We have been involved in many activities since our arrival in Cuba, meetings with institutions, we visited children's homes without family's protection, who are called that but have a lot of affection, I don't like that name very much. When you arrive you realize that there is so much love distributed there that you cannot call them that. I was at the Latin American School of Medicine, ELAM, where I had the opportunity to meet with North American students recently graduated from Medicine and I was able to appreciate how beautiful our people do for the world, with this program that graduates doctors who later distribute health in any corner of the world.

“I met with some of the Olympic medalists from Tokyo and it was a tremendous experience, that is important because Cuban athletes are not only glories of those who are inside the Island, they are of all Cubans who love to see when our flag wins a medal, any worthy Cuban anywhere in the world vibrates, they also build bridges of love.

“Finally, we met with President Miguel Díaz-Canel, we had a very useful talk in which I spoke to him about issues that concern Cubans living abroad, needs, concerns and the desire that any measure taken in Let Cuba always be to build bridges of love between those from here and those from there ”.

Carlos Lazo talks about the Cuba that he found upon his arrival with the passion of someone who reconnects with his roots. “The Cuba that I remembered is the one that I carry with me in memory, which is not physics, it is the Cuba of the heart. In economic terms, the country is going through a very difficult situation, this is what I saw different now from other times that I have returned, which even makes it difficult to access medicines, things that a few years ago were not a cause for concern, which is given by the pandemic and the sharpening of the United States sanctions against the country, but I also saw a people who continue to believe in hope, who continue to dream, who continue to think that tomorrow can be better, a people who continue to multiply the few loaves and fish that it has. That encourages me to continue doing my bit, which is not only mine, it belongs to many people, who want to continue helping our families and build bridges of love.
