CAMAGÜEY. In the province, the pharmaceutical industry is reinventing itself day by day, blending tradition with modern practices. The Provincial Company of Pharmacies and Optical Services in Camagüey oversees the commercialization and distribution of medicines, optical products, and orthopedic supplies.

In recent years, the company has strongly promoted the production and sale of natural and traditional medicine, aligning with a national policy that encourages the use of Camagüey’s rich biodiversity and herbal knowledge passed down through generations.

Damaris Guillén Vis, the institution’s technical and production director, explained that there are currently two pharmacies specializing in natural medicine, flower therapy, and homeopathic remedies: Pharmacy 6-55, located at Martí and San Pablo, and Pharmacy 6-48, at Avellaneda and Pobre.

At Pharmacy 6-48, available homeopathic treatments include arnica, used as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory; simplita, prescribed for fracture recovery under orthopedic supervision; Hamamelis virginiana, recommended for circulatory issues; and Calcarea carbonica, used for bone-related conditions. Other remedies such as nicotino, valerian, and passionflower are also offered.

Meanwhile, Pharmacy 6-55 provides 17 types of natural medicine products, including cough-relief drops, anamú tincture (analgesic), guava, fennel (digestive aid), cañasanta, and passionflower, among others.

It is important to note that the sale of these medications is regulated, with a current limit of up to four bottles per person.

Thanks to their accessibility and effectiveness, traditional medicine has moved beyond being a complementary option to become a practical solution for a wide range of ailments.

The true value of natural medicine lies in preserving ancestral knowledge while embracing modern scientific advances. These remedies serve as a constant reminder that some of the most powerful treatments have been growing around us for centuries.
