CAMAGÜEY.- The third edition of the Convergence Workshop “Standing up against climate change”, summoned by the Cuban Association of Technicians and Forest Agriculturists (Actaf, Spanish acronym), was celebrated as a fundamental space for the design of strategies for the protection of the Environment and the mitigation of climate change.

The lectures that stood out in the commissions: Biodiversity, Management of the Soil and the Environment were the ones referred to the encouragement of varieties of grain resistant to droughts, such as the bean Cuba 154, the work of environmental education for the new generations, the sustainable management of soils affected by salinization, the extension of good agro-ecological practices and its impact in different territories, among others.

Lissette Olivera Lavastede, executive secretary of the Actaf, pointed out as a particularity of this edition, that most of the works presented were supported in the application of science and its harmony with the wisdom of the country. “This is a space that reaffirms the necessity of migrating to an agriculture model. To incourage in the new generations the need of spreading in Cuba the so-called sustainable ‘miraculous plant’”.

In the workshop Redimio Manuel Pedraza Olivera, doctor in Veterinary Science and tenure professor of the University of Camagüey (UC) gave a lecture about the cientific international collaboration project “Multidisciplinary ecofriendly approaches to control and handle marabú in the mid-eastern region of Cuba”, developed by the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte (UC) and Ghent in Belgium.

This event had the collaboration of the university of the province, the Soils Institute, the provincial delegations of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Science, technology and Environment and technicians and professionals of the agrarian sector, who develop work plans for the accomplishment of an environmental balance in collaboration with the community.

It was relevant in the day, the award of the youth contest ForestArt. con Bambú, that boosts the need of encouraging in the new generations the need to spread in Cuba the so-called “miraculous plant”.
