Sierra de Cubitas, Camagüey.- World Nature Day was proclaimed by the United Nations in order to make known the beauty and variety of wild flora and fauna.
It is necessary to be aware and to find a way to protect the species that are seriously threatened mainly those in danger of extinction, their disappearance is directly or indirectly related to the man, due to several factors such as the illegal hunting and trade in animals, the reduction of habitat by indiscriminate logging of forests and the use of pesticides to increase the extent of arable land, to name a few examples.
In the environmental issues, Cuba is at the forefront. The importance in the protection of flora and fauna is the center of greater attention on the part of the Cuban state especially in those areas that because of their great natural values present exceptional conditions.
The municipality Sierra de Cubitas has the ecological Reserve Limones- Tuabaquey, the National System of Protected Areas, its beauty is backed by the rich diversity of species in the middle and east of the country where they inhabit about 600 species of plants, counting also with a fascinating fauna and notable for its more than 70 species.
The Northern territory reflects the result of more than a decade of actions aimed at preserving nature. Efforts include involving nearby communities, since the greatest aggressions to the ecosystem are coming from there.
Currently two community projects are implemented: Sunrise, aimed at adults and Free Wings, designed for children in the area, which aims to influence the traditions of the inhabitants to make them coexistent with the requirements keeping the Ecological Reserve Limones-Tuabaquey as a treasure that qualifies the wealth of Camagüey.
