Each year, to mark International Dance Day, a leading figure from the world of dance delivers a message shared with professionals and organizations in more than 200 countries.

In 2026, that voice belongs to Crystal Pite, one of the most influential creators in contemporary dance today. Born in Canada in 1970, she performed with Ballet British Columbia and Ballett Frankfurt under the direction of William Forsythe before forging an acclaimed career as a choreographer.

Founder of Kidd Pivot, Pite has created celebrated works such as Betroffenheit, Flight Pattern, and Revisor, addressing themes like trauma, memory, and the human condition through movement. Her work has earned major international recognition, including the Olivier Award.

Her selection as the 2026 message author reinforces dance as both an artistic and social tool—one capable of expressing what lies beyond words.

Why is International Dance Day celebrated?

The aim of International Dance Day is to honor dance as a universal and diverse art form, bringing together all those who have chosen this means of expression, regardless of cultural, political, or ethical boundaries.

What is dance?

Through bodily movement, human beings have expressed and communicated since ancient times. Dance is therefore a form of expression and social interaction, often accompanied by rhythm, and serves artistic, cultural, religious, and entertainment purposes.

From classical traditions like The Nutcracker Suite to contemporary creations, dance continues to evolve while remaining rooted in the body as its primary instrument—a living language that connects individuals and communities across the world.
