CAMAGÜEY.- In order to revitalize the dancing movement in Camagüey and the arising of new choreographers, emerged the first Choreographic Contest Fernando Alonso in memoriam, scheduled from November 25 to December 1st, 2019.

It was created with the support of the Honorary Chair Fernando Alonso of the University of Arts ISA, the Camagüey Ballet (BC) and sponsored by the Performing Arts Provincial Council (CPAE, Spanish Acronym).

The students, teachers, choreographers and dancers interested in participating, must present, during September, a five to ten minute-long work in any dancing genre; and will aim at three cash prizes and to be a part of the repertoire of the companies in the territory.

In a press conference, Kenny Ortigas, vice president of the CPAE, considered also the possibilities of the contest as “a promotional strategy to bring the public closer to the theater. Novelty can stimulate attendance”.

“The new generations need to know what Fernando Alonso did and to remember him during their lives. The country and Camagüey province owe him a lot”, insisted Regina Balaguer, director of the BC.

“We cannot forget. We are here because there was a Gilda Zaldívar, a Vicentina de la Torre, a Martha Matamoros… and many other figures that we had as reference for our carreer, and today we do not have. There is no reference like the one in the 70's and 80's”, added.
