HAVANA.- Russian Aleksey Dreev and American Samuel Shankland remain on top of the Elite group of the 2018 Capablanca Memorial chess championships taking place at Havana´s Habana Libre hotel.

They were the only winners in this round, the fifth one, and now both amount 3.5 units, according to the official website of the tournament.

Dreev beat Spanish David Anton in 34 moves of a Queen´s Gambit opening, while Shankland defeated Cuban Yusnel Bacallao in 32 plays of a Caro Kann defense.

The other match of the day was a draw between Russian Aleksandr Rakhmanov and local Lazaro Bruzon in only 19 moves of a Queen´s Pawn opening.

After these results, the aforementioned leaders are followed by Rakhmanov with 2.5 points, Bruzon and Bacallao (2 each) and Anton (1.5).

Meanwhile, in the Open group, Peruvian Deivy Vera remained unbeaten after drawing with his compatriot Cristian Cruz and now totals 4.5 units and remains on top of the standings among more than 200 contestants.
