Solemn Joy Characterizes Pope Francis' Mass in Havana

Addressing those present at his welcoming ceremony at the José Martí International Airport in Havana, Pope Francis urged Cuba and the United States to advance the process toward fully normalized bilateral ties, begun in December last year, and stressed that “it is an example of reconciliation in a world threatened by the possibility of a Third World War.”

The Pontiff thanked the Cuban government and people for the warm welcome offered to him and his delegation, and sent special greetings to Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro and all Cubans around the world.

Regarding relations between Cuba and the Vatican, the Pope said: “With this visit, we are renewing our friendship and cooperation ties.”
