In Cuba The Day of Science is celebrated each 15 of January. Year after year scientists camagüeyans commemorate the date imbued in the example of Fidel, and with the satisfaction of contributing to the solution of specific problems affecting the population.

It is so that the food production and the sugar industry, energy efficiency, tourism development and human, and adaptation to climate change, constitute the priorities that govern in this province the scientific and technological activity.

But the 2017 imposed another big challenge. Hurricane Irma that struck the province in the month of September, beyond the significant economic damage, we also had a negative impact on the environment in the areas where it caused the heaviest damage.

To assess the damages, Lisbet Font Vila, head of the Environmental Unit of the delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), then explained that there were substantial damage on the forest heritage.

"There were large volumes of debris, solid waste, contamination of the water supply by penetrations of the sea, and the existence of dead animals. In protected areas, the main environmental damage associated with the landscape and the vegetation; about 80 % of the vegetation is partially affected, especially the mangrove forests and other natural forests.

"In the homes that existed in the first line of coast in areas vulnerable to coastal flooding by raising the level of the sea, Nuevitas, Port Pilot in Sierra de Cubitas, Beach Florida, and the mouth, in Saint Lucia; adverse situations also occurred.

"The soil was the most damaged natural component in ecosystems, by erosion and pollution processes such as salination. Other damages were in the loss of sand of the dune, increase of escarpments, rocks on the beach fronts, rock fragments on the dune and the vial; among others"

today is still working on the recovery of the beaches and coasts after the passage of the powerful weather event that was Irma, which tested the remedial capacity of the Camagüeyans, and among them, the scientific community, in favor of the rescue of our environment.

The Science beyond Irma

Certainly hurricane sign the work in the last quarter of the year; but from long before, from the very beginning of the year, worked with certainty on other fronts.

In the field of health, excelled during the 2017 trial on the CIMAvac-EGF vaccine for the treatment of patients with lung cancer, and the growth of the social impact of the HEBERPROT-P in the cure of the diabetic foot ulcer.

The Doctor in Sciences Liudmila Houses Rodríguez, director of the Center for Technological Innovation at the University of Medical Sciences Carlos J. Finlay, in dialog with Radio Cadena Agramonte meant the results of the test.

"It is a very valuable and the Ministry has managed to generalize at the primary care level, or, in the areas of health, to where the patient can go to get your attention, treatment, and follow-up, without having to be hospitalized."

It was precisely the continuous, rigorous and consecrated him to the University of Camagüey (UC) Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz be among the scientific centers with better results in the recently concluded calendar.

Rosalba Aguilera Gómez, a specialist of the Directorate of Science and Technology of the house of higher studies, said that scientific research is a priority at that institution, which aims this year to achieve the Excellence category.

Without a doubt, a guarantee in that regard is the collection of nine of the 13 Provincial Awards CITMA delivered only a few days ago. Also, three of the surveys (of the four that presents the province of Camagüey), are proposed to the National Prize of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, which recognizes the results of the investigations that are highlighted in the country, thereby stimulating the scientific creation, the visibility of the Cuban science as part of the national and universal heritage, as well as its contribution to the economic development of the country.

One of these works is the so-called "Systems of command for the management of local development," Dr. Iris María González Torres, who explained that "a dashboard is a director at any level, from the business to the government, which the board of the automobile is your driver. The Board Command is constructed from a set of indicators that emit signals on the behavior of the territorial economy, which are important not only to assess these results, but also to alert about the possible difficulties that may arise in the future to achieve them.

"This is a job that has been developed for seven years and currently applied for the economic analysis here in the province of Camagüey".

CIMAC also contributed

The Center for Research of the Environment of Camaguey (CIMAC), was recognized as the most outstanding among the 19 institutions and the three universities where the scientific potential of the province.

Among its main results during 2017 was the advice to the investment process in the north, an ecosystem of high fragility and ecological sensitivity; in addition to a strategic program of economic importance for the development of tourism in the region.

Also important was the joint work with other entities in the introduction of measures to adapt to climate change and good practices in the agricultural sector as part of the project "environmental databases for local food sustainability", funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in the town of Yogyakarta; and the "Plan of sustainable land management", implemented in nine farms in the province.

For the researchers of the CIMAC, environmental education is one of the most important steps, as it relates to the man with his environment, with their environment and are looking for a change of attitude, an awareness of the importance of preserving for the future and to improve our quality of life. It considers the Ms.C. Nereyda Junco, director of the center.

"The hurricane Irma valid what scientific investigations have shown for years, on the island of our country, and the vulnerabilities that this represents in coastal areas, and particularly in the coastal settlements, especially with the dangers posed by climate change, such as the rise of the sea level.

"Our gaze is related to environmental education, to convince the inhabitants about the importance of taking care of the beaches, raise awareness with these issues.

"In Florida, for example, we have environmental education projects to increase the perception of disaster risk, and awareness of the conservation of natural values and biodiversity of this area, as well as sensitize them to the conservation of the natural resources of the majority of the people that have as their main economic activity".

By its results in projects that have as their point of view the most pressing problems in Cuba, Camagüey is a province of science and thought, with men and women who work for the economic development and well-being of the country, as asked Fidel.
