Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria, sent invitations to hold separate talks with the Syrian government and opposition factions.

The five permanent Security Council members -China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States-, and representatives of the countries involved will also participate.

In a recent press conference, the spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Lukashevich, said that these talks could take time and could last between four and six weeks, and will focus on advancing the political process aimed to resolve the crisis in Syria. Lukashevich reiterated Moscow's support for Staffan de Mistura's peace efforts and said he was confident that the Geneva meeting will have a positive effect on the Syrian situation.
