Gomez Abascal, one of the few diplomats who remained in Iraq during the U.S. bombing, is an expert on issues related to the Middle East, a region where he worked for nearly three decades.

'That instability will continue in Iraq and Syria, because even though Damascus has the capacity to resist, their enemies have resources to maintain the destabilization', he told Prensa Latina.

The diplomat emphasized that, apart from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, United States encourages, supports and participates in a process that might not overthrow governments, but it undermines them.

Iraq is the scene of bloody fighting between the armed forces and the Sunni extremists of the Islamic state groups, which impose terror in a nation where peace seems an utopia.
