HAVANA.-  (ACN) A storm with sustained winds of 84 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 134 hit the Cuban eastern city of Las Tunas wreaking havoc in the buildings, trees and electrical grid.

The meteor hit in the afternoon and for over 38 minutes the rain was intense, registering 51 millimeters, according to the meteorological Center of this province.

Two houses were completely destroyed by the strong winds, while 15 lost  their roofs and 59 sustained more or less severe damages. Several state facilities were also affected by the storm.

This was the first storm this year so far. The winds toppled 17 big trees within the city limits and the rains flooded the Gonzalo de Quesada Street, one of the main arteries of the eastern city.

Right after the passing of the meteor crew from the electricity company and the Community Services took the streets to remove the debris.

The deputy chief of the Meteorological Center said the main problem was that the rain was so fast and heavy that the poorly maintained sewer system couldn’t cope with the amount of water, causing the floods.
