Havana . – Cuban journalists will pay tribute to the Apostle of the Independence, José Martí, and the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro, in the context of the celebrations for the Day of the Press, which will take place in the country from March 5 to March 14.

People awarded with the National Prize of Journalism, personalities of the profession and the presidency of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) will remember these two great men, who considered the media as indispensable instruments to do Revolution, in the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, in Santiago de Cuba.

In a press conference, it was announced that the professionals of the letters will reflect on the thinking of Martí in Fidel, and how his knowledge about the revolutionary project of the National Hero allowed him to elaborate his own program of fight, presented in the plea La Historia me absolverá (History will absolve me) .

Moreover, they will pay a special tribute to caricaturists and comic strip artists, since Fidel valued their utility and considered humor as an essential tool for the triumph of the revolutionary ideas.

During the encounter, it was set that next Friday they will announce the National Prize of Journalism José Martí, and the winners of the Annual Award of Journalism Juan Gualberto Gómez, for which there are 33 and 64 nominees, respectively.

Bárbara Doval, vice-president of the UPEC, pointed out that all delegationssent   their proposals, except from Artemisa, and she emphasized that provinces with more representatives were Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus and Santiago de Cuba.

The jury – she said – is presided by Juana Carrasco, and it is formed by another 16 prestigious journalists of the media.

Carrasco expressed that it will be a complex task to select the winners, and even more if it is the one chosen to the National Prize of Journalism José Martí, due to their life work. She manifested that all candidates can be considered as prizewinners.

She explained that this task requires hours of insomnia, to seek in that journalist an exceptional work, which significantly contributes to the revolutionary press, as Martí and Fidel dreamed.

Since 1992, each March 14 the Day of the Cuban Press is celebrated, as a tribute to the first number of the newspaper Patria, funded and directed by José Martí, with the intention of spreading the work for the independence among Cubans and Puerto Ricans.
