HAVANA.- The 2018-2019 harvest will begin next November at the Argeo Martinez sugar mill in the province of Guantanamo, announced on Sunday in Havana Julio Andres Garcia Perez, president of AZCUBA Sugar Group.

In the first days of next month, that sugar mill industry will start its machines, which will mark the beginning of the harvest, García Pérez told the Cuban News Agency.

He added that 20 mills will do it in the same period and most of them in December, while Noel Casañas Lugo, vice-president of AZCUBA, said that in January the "Enrique José Varona" and the "Colombia", in the provinces of Ciego de Ávila and Las Tunas, respectively, will enter into action until the figure of 54 is completed.

José Ramón Monteagudo Ruiz, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, García Pérez, and other leaders, exchanged this Sunday with producers of high sugarcane yields in most of the country's provinces.

The latter visited on Saturday base business units and other groups of the Mayabeque Sugar Company to verify in situ their experiences of operation in the 2017-2018 harvest.

The deliberations took place at the National Sugar Training Center (CNCA) on the national summary of the assembly process of sugarcane cooperatives in the last harvest, impacted by an intense drought during the last two years, heavy rains since September with Hurricane Irma and the most recent rainfall.

In this regard, Monteagudo Ruiz called to pay greater attention to the planting of canes in order to increase production and adequate preparation of vines and varieties, as well as soil preparation and rational use of machinery, aggregates and implements.

He also advocated the correct use of resources, the strengthening of production units, and the improvement of the care of producers, with high yields or not, to contribute to the consolidation of economic efficiency.
