HAVANA, CUBA.-The Cuban shopping network Tiendas Caribe, formerly TRD, will open an e-commerce service in summer, in Cuban pesos, the national currency which currently runs parallel to the convertible pesos which equals the value of dollars.

The project will start for the time being only at a Havana shop and will expand to at least one shop in each Cuban province.

Those Cubans with access to the Internet can do their shopping from home, work center or other places, reads an article posted on Granma newspaper, which cites Tiendas Caribe’s commercial official Martha Mulet.

In order to access the service, the person needs to have access to the national network, a debit card in Cuban pesos and a card used to pay for utilities, all provided by Cuban banks.

During its first stage, t project offers food, drinks and liqueurs and depending on local demand the shopping center will add other products.

But still, the clients have to pick their products at the shop in the first instance, only on the second stage the purchase will be taken to the client’s places, the article explains.
