CAMAGÜEY.- (ACN) The municipality of Sierra de Cubitas, second in the country in importance in citrus production after Jaguey Grande  in Matanzas, shows a recovery in this area, with 212 hectares (ha) of new orange ,grapefruit  and Persian lime plantations.

Raul Alejandro Bárcenas González, general director of the Sola Agricultural and Citrus Company, said that the purpose is to rescue between 150 and 300 ha annually, up to three thousand, of a potential of about 10,000, the number they had before the deterioration of that agricultural sector.

The Camagüey’s entity is also distinguished by being the only one of its kind in Cuba that produces organic citrus for export, widely accepted in the international market because they don’t use fertilizers or other chemical products to grow them while getting higher yields.

Among the main destinations for the citrus they harvest are tourist facilities located in the northern region of Camaguey, where new facilities are being built.

In addition, there is the sale to the population through Acopio, which received more than 300 tons last year, still insufficient to meet the high demand of these assortments.

Leonel González Sánchez and Migdalia Cardoso Llorente, are a couple that in areas of the Company benefited from the granting of land in usufruct, and this year have marketed more than 36 tons of food through Acopio.

This volume includes, in addition to citrus, various crops and fruit, a variety that characterizes the rest of the producers in the area.

In El Tuabaquey, belonging to the aforementioned entity, they produce two thousand liters of six-flavored syrups, 60 kilograms of sweets in syrup of grapefruit and papaya, and 400 of tomato pastes every day despite problems with availability of containers, explained Pedro Padrosa Santí, administrator of that facility.
