CAMAGUEY.- (ACN) The National Office of Tax Administration (ONAT) in the central Cuban province of Camaguey collected over 2 billion pesos from taxpayers in 2016, according to a report issued by the entity.

Leticia Palenzuela, ONAT director, said these monies guarantee the sustainability of social programs, since they were allocated in the public health, education, culture, social security and sports, among other sectors.

She stressed on the importance of taxpayers fulfilling their responsibilities since this covers the free public services the citizens of the province enjoy.

The ONAT office sponsors an information bulletin in the local radio under the title ¨Where do our taxes go? ¨to inform taxpayers the use the government gives to their contribution, as part of a campaign to educate them on the need to pay taxes.

Despite this and other sources of information on the topic, some taxpayers say this is insufficient. A cafeteria owner, Juan Pablo Gallardo, says the more they know about the use of their taxes, the happier they will be to pay them.

ONAT registry shows there are over 70 thousand taxpayers in Camaguey. Because of a better discipline shown by private and state taxpayers, the amount paid last year is 208 million pesos more than in 2015, the report states.
