HAVANA.- (ACN) UNESCO’s regional director Katherine Muller Marin praised on Wednesday in Camaguey the Office of the City Historian in Camaguey for the work it has done in its 20 years.

The regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean spoke at the inaugural session of the 11th International Symposium on Challenges in the Management of Cities underway in the eastern province.

The specialist highlighted the work of different institutions for the preservation and conservation of the historic city declared a World Heritage Site in 2008.

She added an alliance also implies benefits in culture, one of the facilitating elements in sustainable development and a strategic resource for inclusive, creative and sustainable human settlements.

The UNESCO representative also said that this type of status in historic cities responds to an interdisciplinary and pluri-institutional task with the participation of its citizens.

Muller Marin placed emphasis in the need to look for harmony between the protection of the heritage areas and the repercussions in development, objective in which Cuba is an example.

Wednesday’s session included activities like the debut of a documentary  called La Ciudad Infinita (Infinite City) dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the historian’s office.

Delegates from 11 provinces, Colombia and Ecuador also present in event that will run until Friday will discuss the impact in the development of historic cities.

The activity will also include a book presentation called Ajedrez hacia la Luz by Antonio Guerrero, one of the Cuban Five and selecting a winner for the Alarife Publico Fulgencio Arambula Award.
