Right in a trunk of a tree to the north of Camagüey the population was discovered, predominantly of females, of the species that feeds on fishing and is reproduced close to the second trimester of the year.

“When it is reported in 2010, the colony was provided with 73 individuals. Today it has about 219”, affirmed Eleandro Lamarté, biologist of the Protection Company of the Flora and the Fauna in the north territory, across the program Despejando X of Television Camagüey.

A key to the victory is the construction of the first artificial refuges of the world with natural elements for the species, in minor quantity located in the provinces of Mayabeque, Ciego de Ávila and Las Tunas.

“The fishing bat goes out about 7:30 pm in small groups. It fishes in the beach, to approximately two kilometers of the refuge. We make use of this schedule for counting the population”, said Eleandro Lamarté.

With the open wings the copies measure between 70 and 80 centimeters, a characteristic to classify then among the three big ones of the American continent.

“The threat comes for the scarcity of refuges, because the man makes use of the fallen and death trees like firewood or coal”, added the specialist who works in this part of the insular group Jardines del Rey or Archipiélago Sabana-Camagüey.

In April was realized a counting for the first study in Camagüey with proposals of conservation and handling of the chiropter fauna, along with the project CUBABAT, associated with the Program of Conservation of the Cuban Bats.

The bats play an important role in the ecosystems, since they control the populations of insects and bugs, and help with the pollination.
