Located in the Historical Center of the province, in the union between two of its main streets -Maceo and Republica- its origins go back towards the ends of the XVIIth century when the Spanish settlers were shaping different urban emplacements to make the town grow that had been founded two centuries ago and that took as an initial name Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe.

As any foundation square of the Camagüeyan capital, a church gets up in its surroundings. This is called La Soledad and it is considered to be one of the most famous buildings and a religious temple that sums up the ideologies of the colonial epoch, but at the same time it represents the identity of our ancestors.

Close to it, stands out what is today the Camino de Hierro hotel, ancient establishment of stores with the same name.

The current park was occupied by the house of Councilor Eusebio Tomas de Villanueva, which was used some years later for the commerce and later it was beaten in by the deterioration presented. It possesses today a balance between the colonial and the eclectic architectures, especially for the reshapings that have been done to its ancient real estate.

Located in the Historical Center declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity, at present this square constitutes one of the most important ones of the city of Camagüey, due also to its adjacent location with the Maceo street, principal trade route of the province.
