With seven artificial kidneys of Fresenius technology and founded on December 23rd, 2003, this room is the second biggest of its type in Camagüey, preceded only by the Center of Nephrology of the University Hospital "Manuel Ascunce Domenech", with more than 30 machines of hemodialysis.

Estela Llanes Veiga, head of the service in Martín Chang Puga, told that this area has two lounges, one for patients without hepatitis and other for patients with this type of illnesses, in order to avoid the transmission of the virus, and it is equipped with a water treatment plant.

The annual cost of the treatments ranges between the 30 000 and 40 000 euros, according to a multicentral study in Spain, published in Internet by the digital magazine Nefrología, nevertheless in Cuba they are offered completely free.

The chronic renal illness affects 10 per cent of the world population, and its fundamental causes are the diabetes mellitus and the arterial hypertension, therefore the adoption of healthy life styles can prevent its appearance.

Martín Chang Puga will receive a cardinal repair next year, which will complete the partial intervention that was done on six operating theaters and the room of Gynecology.
