This fast process limited the possibilities of applying a strategy of sustainable protection, complicated with the dumpings trapped by the waters of the Saramaguacán river, whose basin ends in an extreme of the bay with waters from places so far as the n orth of the municipality of Camagüey and Sibanicú. Before the aler issued by specialists of the Ministry, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) and also from the proper inhabitants, the government  started a program of recovery to fight the contamination.

A few days ago the thermoelectric power station 10 de Octubre, was the head office of the Workshop “Por una bahía saludable”, annual event to celebrate the World Day of the Environment. On this matter the M.Sc. Georgelina Moré Fundora specialist of the CITMA, said that this year the workshop was devoted to those companies that do not fulfilled their committements.

“Today, Nuevitas Bay, said Moré Fundora, is catalogued by specialists as healthy for the quality of its waters although there is still work to be done.

She added that the monitoring that controls the quality of the water in the areas of beach of public use, register an aceptable quality.

During the event was also known that the ¨Grupo Bahía¨ realizes costal monitorings every three years and that since 1997, according to a project of the Ministry of Transport, studies are applied on the quantity of dissolved hydrocarbons produced by the fishing industry.

For her part the M.Sc. Irma Martínez Sánchez, main specialist of the Provincial Delegation of CITMA highlighted the work in the bay and its biodiversity, as well as the importance of this task.
