A few years ago, although we reach the scheduled plan, there were non-fulfillments in certain months but this situation changed and today here sustainability of the delivery of the vital liquyid to the health system is guaranteed, explained Yoanka Fernández, director of the institution.

With 30 000 blood withdrawals scheduled for this year, apart from contributing to the transfussions in the health care services, the more than 11 000 donors in Camagüey respond to different programs like plasmapheresis, apheresis platelet and reserve donors.

In the case of the plasmapheresis, the Camagüeyan bank is highlighted not only by its deliveries, about 3 700 liters in 2015, but also for meeting the most stringent quality parameters, like weight, color and documentation, said Dr. Fernández.

By means of this process it is obtained the plasma or liquid component of the blood for the production of hemoderivatives as transference factor, human albumin and gamma globulins.

Dr. Fernández, qualified as positive the results of the apheresis platelet, vital for reducing from 10 to 1 the necessary transfussions for every time a patient requires a treatment.

She also explained that there is a reserve of the controlled blood groups, according to the ABO typification system, created by the austrian biologist Karl Landstainer, for the difficultyof finding people with the antigens A, B and O negatives, B positive and AB positive and negative.

Paying tribute to the birthday of this scientist, June 14th, it is celebrated the World Day of Blood Donors, people that in Cuba do not receive any remuneration and do this action voluntarily.
