Next November it will celebrate its 3rd anniversary. In a little time the new musical group of this city has turned into the principal exponent of the jazz with its peculiar way of interpreting the genre.

Its director, Ortelio Hernández Viñas, is not afraid of the reporters, not of his trumpet. “The group is made up by six musicians who play the piano, the battery, saxophone, trumpet, ¨tumbadora¨ and the electrical guitars, and two singers.

“About 30 topics purely of jazz shape the repertoire; we always try to mix it with the Cuban and Caribbean musician, with the bolero, the son, the cha cha and foreign genres as the bossa nova to make it a little more modern, also we interpret some international themes and others made up by the proper members.

“On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday we have our show in the Gran Hotel and since the last year we kick off to perform in other provinces. In September we were in Santiago de Cuba during the Festival Amigos Jazz and we shared with big musicians like Bobby Carcassés, César López, Alfred Tompson, among others”.

In November they took part in the International Contest JoJazz where the group received the First Award in the category of small format; and the one that in this moment was the bassist of the group obtained the maximum award in composition.

“Many doors have opened from this moment, -mentions Ortelio- the invitation to the International Festival Jazz Plaza in its 30th edition, one of the most important festivals of the genre of Latin America, and the incursion in the catalog of the Company of Popular Music of Havana.

Four of this young people were formed in the Conservatory of Music José White of this city, therefore to Maracujazz it has not been difficult to turn into some kind of teaching unit; several are the students of the school who share the stage with the group during its habitual presentations, recently one of them accompanied the group to the “Jazz Plaza”.

These boys decided to break the shell and to penetrate into this world of music and jazz that demands so much professionalism; to Camagüey only has to offer its hands and to force them to grow with the applauses.
