THE THEATER, BRIDGE OF THE UNITED STATES AND CUBA

The theater supports a bridge between Cuba and the United States confirmed in this city concerning the text Sonia went away, written by the Cuban-American Melinda López, and based on the operation Peter Pan who separated 15 000 children of their parents.

The massive extraction happened at the beginning of the victory of the Cuban Revolution, for the conspiracy of the American Department of State, the CIA, the English secret services and the catholic church.

Actors of the group Argos Teatro put the voice to the personages, in the dramatized reading of two acts, the first contextualized in the city of Minneapolis in December, 2001, and the second one in Havana of April, 1961.

The first approach to the text was to listen and to feel the intensities come from the cast integrated by Maribelmis Marín, Mariana Valdés, Daniel Romero, José Hidalgo, Waldo Franco and Yailín Coppola, who assume different rolls in every act.

It turned out to be a containment exercise for the public, between students and teachers of the University of the Arts, the directors of scenic groups, actors, critics and visitors of the sector of the Culture, among others become accredited persons of the Festival.

Later it corresponded the exchange with Melinda López and Alberto Sarraín, who had a recognized influence, for the wise move of their translation of this text with the tearing of the History of Cuba written originally in English.

Sarraín, also resident in the United States, commented of his taste for the Melinda proposal, “for the Cuban sense of the language although it was written in English, and the miscellany of the tragedy and the comedy. I would like directing the work”.

Sonia is a fifteen-year-old girl forced by the decision of her parents to travel alone to a destination without comeback, in foreign ground she will found a family and will try to support very close her two children, especially to the male determined to join to the marines' body to fight in Afghanistan.

Sonia went away remembers an open wound preceded by the exoduses of more than 20 000 Basque children in 1937 during the Spanish civil war, and of more than 30 000 Jew of Germany between 1938 and 1939.

In the Center of Conventions Santa Cecilia, the authoress recounted topics as the sexual violence in the university, to emphasize that her most popular works are recounted to Cuba, her other nation of rooting and object of deep investigation.

“I would like to do a representation for my people how the Cubans of now are, but I did not know it until I came in 2011. The Americans feel Cubans like Sonia's life. This is the work of the theater. This way, another world is understood, because it goes out of the heart”, insisted Melinda.

A complement to the talk An island, the theater: 20 years of exchange, and arguments window occurred the presentation of the book Ser Cuba (To Be Cuba), of Melinda López, published by the Cuban publishing house Alarcos.
