Prop of the culture of the Camagüeyan territory, among the homage there is highlighted the XXth International Meet of Ballet Academies, which was developed in April in different facilities of the capital of the island, the decision of that the National School of Ballet takes its name and several functions of the company that he directed for nearly 20 years.

Its initial presentation to the public was on December 1st, 1967, thanks to the firmness and the dedication of teacher Vicentina de la Torre, already deceased, who was a pupil of the school of Alicia Alonso and who was directing a ballet school in the Camagüeyan metropolis, to approximately 530 kilometers to the east of Havana.

At the end of the 70s of last century the teacher Fernando Alonso created the so-called Cuban School of Ballet, directing the group.

There kicked off then the projection out of borders of the company, with performances in several countries of Europe like Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, Russia, and Greece;, of America and of Asia, and its participation in diverse international Festivals.

It is provided with over 250 works staged along its trajectory and among the classic ones there are Giselle, Coppelia, La fille mal gardée, the Pas des deux of Diana and Acteón, Don Quixote, and The Swans Lake; and others of the modern dance as Saerpil, Primer intento and Majísimo.

Many of its ballet dancers and maitres have acted in the Ballet of Fine Arts of Mexico, that of Monterrey, Trujillo and the Royal of Wallonie.

At present it has in its repertoire works as Degas, the Seventh symphony of Beethoven, Nisi Dominus and Tango episodes, of Jorge Lefebre, heir of the artistic legacy of Maurice Béjart and member of the Ballet of the XXth Century and later director of the Ballet Royal of Wallonie.

Directed from 1997 by the ballerina and regisseur Regina Balaguer, its dance body is extremely young between 18 and 23 years, and it comes from the ballet schools of the country.

The presentations of the Ballet of Camagüey for over 30 countries of Europe, Asia and America and its national tours every year to enrich the cultural heritage of the Cuban, reaffirm its excellent virtuosity and harden its quality and execution in the stages.

In Camagüey it has its forum in the emblematic Principal Theater, where it offers its awaited functions always with a public who recognizes the tradition of the company.
