Fidel made his statement during a meeting, Friday morning, with the members of the  National Bureau of the Young Communists League (UJC) in Havana.

Details of the meeting and Fidel´s words were recounted Friday evening by journalist Arleen Rodriguez during the prime time TV show "The Round Table".

The journalist said that during his dialog with UJC members, students and workers at Havana´s Convention Center, Fidel strongly condemned the unjustified confinement of Gerardo Hernandez in the punishment cell known as "the hole" by noting: "as if the high- security prison where he suffers from loneliness and injustice were not yet a very deep hole."

All  he needs is medical attention, said Fidel and went on to dub as torture the bad treatment given to the antiterrorist fighter, which "is known by the courts of that country, who gave him the unjust sentence, as well as by the illustrious President of the United States."

In his dialogue with representatives of the Cuban youth Fidel gave his views on the serious problems threatening the world, like the events in the Korean Peninsula and the situation regarding Iran, which could lead to a nuclear war.

The TV show also featured two documentary films titled "Yo soy Santiago" (I´m Santiago) by director Omelio Borroto, on the history and identity of the inhabitants of the that eastern Cuban city, and "Asalto a la Historia"

(Assault on History)  by filmmaker Eduardo de la Torre, about the historic attack on the Moncada garrison, by a group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro.
